Aerial Spraying
Each year the BCA contracts with Duflo Spray Chemical Co. Inc. to conduct aerial spraying at Brantingham beginning in May and through the summer season as needed. The sprays target black flies, mosquitos and gnats that are flying at the time of application. Black flies are most active during the day while mosquitoes are most active at night which is why the sprays are commonly conducted at dusk when when both of these insects are most active. The repeated application helps to cut down on the adult population of these insects present at the lake, but does not help control the population of other insects including ticks. When a spray is scheduled a message is posted to the Brantingham Lake Facebook group informing the public of the spray time.
Our contractor uses Kontrol 30-30 for applications. This product contains Pyrethrins, which act as natural pesticides found in some chrysanthemum flowers. Also included is the use of Piperonyl Butoxide (PBO), which acts as a synergist that prevents the insect from developing a resistance to the insecticide.
